A WINDOW SEAT FOR EVERY TRAVELER
Though many companies offer family safaris where guests travel with 25 or more passengers in a parade of crowded mini buses, our Toyota Land Cruisers are custom-designed for bush travel and hold just four to five. That means that each traveler (children included) enjoys a window seat for uninterrupted wildlife viewing and photography.
The migration has made its way south, heading for the short grassy plains of the Southern Serengeti. This is peak foaling season for zebras, and as we move into February you’ll see the arrival of half a million wildebeest calves. Ndutu, the southern concessions of the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Conservation area are the places to be.
The rains have hit and walls of water sweep across the savannah dumping millions of gallons onto the rich fertile soil. The landscape transforms and the game floods into the central area. Seronera is a moving mass of millions of animals, the Moru Kopjies are a hot spot, and as the season moves along on the Western Corridor, Grumeti plays host to the herds.
June is tricky to predict as the migration is rarely still for any length of time. We’re entering the dry season in the Serengeti and the herds begin to move north; up through the Grumeti, sometimes swinging back through central and up to Lobo, gearing up for Kenya. It’s a fascinating time of year and may be worth splitting your stay between the west or central parts of the Serengeti with the far north to hedge your bets.
Now is the time to be near the rivers and permanent water sources of the Mara. In the Serengeti, you need to be north in and around Kogatende, or across the river in the Lamai Wedge (river crossings here in July and August are almost guaranteed with multiple crossing sites to choose from). The predators of Kenya’s Mara are enjoying their seasonal glut, and the crocodiles are growing fat. One of the most dramatic events in the animal kingdom, it’s pure unadulterated drama.
Now, two million wildebeest and hundreds of thousand zebra, topi, eland and gazelle are firmly established in the Maasai Mara. Further south in the central Serengeti, the bush is dry and dusty. It’s an enormous expanse with just the scattered bones that litter the plains giving clues to the number seen here a couple of months prior.
Again, a couple of unpredictable months. When exactly are the herds going to move? Typically, the animals sense the rain coming to the south in November and begin making their way back into the Serengeti, passing through the Loliondo Game Controlled Area, down the eastern edge of the Serengeti, covering a vast area which includes a north-western slice of the Ngorongoro. The rains sweep up from the south, the zebra foals are born and the cycle begins once again.

FLY BETWEEN KEY LOCATIONS, TO REDUCE LONG DRIVES & ENHANCE TIME ON SAFARI
Take advantage of three internal flights, allowing us to cover a vast territory without long, dusty overland drives—we maximize your time with wildlife instead!
Rather than subject you to long, dusty drives between camps, we have included three separate flights—this is a tremendous advantage when it comes to adding more time on safari with wildlife, and less time bouncing around in a vehicle on rough roads. Compare itineraries carefully: we doubt you’ll find such transportation advantages on most safaris!
This morning, relive a chapter of local history at Mbogani House, the former home of Karen Blixen made famous by the film, Out of Africa. Continue on to the nearby Giraffe Center, a wildlife refuge situated on the sprawling grounds of coffee mogul David Duncan’s Giraffe Manor. Next, explore the Daphne Sheldrick Animal Orphanage, a shelter caring for at-risk elephant and rhino calves.
Drive to your secluded bush camp in Sweetwaters Game Reserve, a private concession of Ol Pejeta Conservancy. In the evening, sit on your verandah and observe the wildlife moving in and out of the shadows as they come to drink at the waterhole.
Set out on morning and evening game drives in Sweet waters Game Reserve, tracking the “Big Five” (lions, elephants, Cape buffalo, leopards and rhinos) through savannah grasslands and riverine forests. Between game drives, relax in camp, perhaps taking a family swim in the pool. You can also explore the reserve by camel back.
Fly to Laikipia Plateau, continuing overland to your safari ranch in Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. As the sun draws low, enjoy a locally sourced dinner under the open African sky.
Take to the bush on game drives tracking big cats, elephants and endangered black rhino. Watch closely for indigenous northern species, such as the beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra and the unusual long-necked gerenuk, which stands on its hind legs to feed. Look, too, for Grant’s gazelles, dik-diks, elands and impala as they, along with majestic leopards and lions, roam the vast landscape. You may also enjoy game viewing by horseback or search for nocturnal species on a night game drive.
Explore the open savanna, woodlands and tree-fringed rivers of the Masai Mara with morning and afternoon game drives. Patient tracking may reveal leopards retrieving kills from acacia branches, or elephants protecting their young from opportunistic lions. With 583 square miles supporting huge numbers of bird and mammal species, game viewing is never dull in the Mara.
Delve deeper into the Mara with a final day of game drives. Today affords a final chance to sight the crafty species that may have eluded you on this epic journey. Later, pay a private visit to a Maasai village to learn about local customs and daily life, or enjoy a guided nature walk with the camp’s resident naturalist.
Drive to Nairobi and relax in your reserved day-room. Later, you are transferred to the airport for your home bound departure.

CLIMATE
Eastern Africa, classically presented as a major dry climate anomaly region in the otherwise wet equatorial belt, is a transition zone between the monsoon domains of West Africa and the Indian Ocean. Its complex terrain, unequaled in the rest of Africa, results in a huge diversity of climatic conditions that steer a wide range of vegetation landscapes, biodiversity and human occupations.
