This itinerary quite simply incorporates three of East Africa’s most sought after regions, the mountainous rain forests of Volcano National Park Bwindi National Park together, the Serengeti National Park and beautiful Island of Zanzibar.
From rain-forest draped volcano slopes rising into the clouds in Rwanda to the endless Savannah plains of Tanzania, this is a classic East African journey. The jungles beyond, stretching up to the Ugandan and Congolese borders, are most famous for being home to mountain gorillas, the largest of the great apes but also one of the gentlest.
GORILLAS & GOLDEN MONKEY TRACKING
Ten groups within the park are habituated to humans, and you’ll get the chance to trek through the forest to spend a magical hour in the company of one family group as young ones play, adolescents show off and mothers dote under the watchful eye of a dominant silverback.
You will also get to meet a troop of golden monkeys, another of the Virunga Mountain range’s endemic primates and hike to see magnificent lakes.
Please note for family travel the minimum age for Gorilla trekking is 15. (doesnt’ apply on Serengeti safari)
This is 16 Days tour and it starts with Volcanoes National Park where you will experience first-hand what it is like to visit Mountain Gorillas in the wild. Following Rwanda you will fly directly into the Serengeti. With the great migration in full flow throughout the year we have used a mobile camp in the Serengeti to maximize your chances of being in the right place at the right time. Your itinerary finishes with some well earned relaxation time on Zanzibar.
FLY INTO KIGALI-RWANDA & OUT OF DAR-ES-SALAAM-TANZANIA
The migration has made its way south, heading for the short grassy plains of the Southern Serengeti. This is peak foaling season for zebras, and as we move into February you’ll see the arrival of half a million wildebeest calves. Ndutu, the southern concessions of the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Conservation area are the places to be.
The rains have hit and walls of water sweep across the savannah dumping millions of gallons onto the rich fertile soil. The landscape transforms and the game floods into the central area. Seronera is a moving mass of millions of animals, the Moru Kopjies are a hot spot, and as the season moves along on the Western Corridor, Grumeti plays host to the herds.
June is tricky to predict as the migration is rarely still for any length of time. We’re entering the dry season in the Serengeti and the herds begin to move north; up through the Grumeti, sometimes swinging back through central and up to Lobo, gearing up for Kenya. It’s a fascinating time of year and may be worth splitting your stay between the west or central parts of the Serengeti with the far north to hedge your bets.
Now is the time to be near the rivers and permanent water sources of the Mara. In the Serengeti, you need to be north in and around Kogatende, or across the river in the Lamai Wedge (river crossings here in July and August are almost guaranteed with multiple crossing sites to choose from). The predators of Kenya’s Mara are enjoying their seasonal glut, and the crocodiles are growing fat. One of the most dramatic events in the animal kingdom, it’s pure unadulterated drama.
Now, two million wildebeest and hundreds of thousand zebra, topi, eland and gazelle are firmly established in the Maasai Mara. Further south in the central Serengeti, the bush is dry and dusty. It’s an enormous expanse with just the scattered bones that litter the plains giving clues to the number seen here a couple of months prior.
Again, a couple of unpredictable months. When exactly are the herds going to move? Typically, the animals sense the rain coming to the south in November and begin making their way back into the Serengeti, passing through the Loliondo Game Controlled Area, down the eastern edge of the Serengeti, covering a vast area which includes a north-western slice of the Ngorongoro. The rains sweep up from the south, the zebra foals are born and the cycle begins once again.
June and July are the driest months in most of the south, but it can still rain. Average temperatures hover around 27°C/81°F in the afternoon and 16°C/61°F in the morning. It will be colder at altitudes above 1300m/4265ft, including the gorilla parks.
Unlike the south, these months are part of the wet season in the north. The far north, including Kidepo Valley, is semi-arid and can experience droughts some years.
Most of the south has less rainfall, but still more when compared to June and July. It is slightly warmer with daytime temperatures of about 28°C/82°F and morning temperatures of 16°C/61°F. The north has a clear Dry season with little rain.
There is more rainfall throughout the country during these months, with a clear peak in April in the south. Most days have some sunshine as well. The rain can make travel more difficult since dirt roads and forest trails used for gorilla tracking can become challenging to navigate. Daytime temperatures average around 28°C/82°F and morning temperatures around 16°C/61°F. It will be colder in the gorilla parks at high altitudes and warmer in the north.
These months are comparable to March, April and May but, on average, there is a bit less rain. Daytime temperatures are around 28°C/82°F.

The endangered Golden monkey enjoys a territory of highland forests, especially bamboo, living in groups of up to thirty individuals. A handful of troops in Volcanoes National Park have been habituated and can be tracked in a similar way to the gorillas.
